Automated call claims the co-op will seek disconnection due to overdue balance

Cresco, IA | Rushford, MN (3:30 p.m. Aug. 6, 2020)— MiEnergy Cooperative has been notified of a possible scam. A member from La Crescent, Minn. contacted the cooperative today about an automated phone call he had received regarding his electric account. As the member listened to the message, they were told their electric account was past due and it was necessary to pay up or be disconnected. It asked the member to press a series of numbers to make payment to avoid disconnection of service.

Fortunately, the member was skeptical and hung up. Local authorities have been contacted.

If members are behind on their account, as some may find themselves due to the pandemic, they will receive notification by mail of the amount due, the disconnection date, energy assistance information and asked to contact the cooperative about their situation. The cooperative does leave phone messages, but the message simply directs the member to make payment or call the office. When in doubt, members can always call MiEnergy directly to ensure the call is real.

Members with questions about their account can contact MiEnergy at 1-800-432-2285.
